How to Restore Faded Cloudy 2000 Honda Accord Headlights

Have you had a difficult seeing in the dark lately? It could be that your headlights are starting to suffer from old age. Just like other parts of older model vehicles, it is common for headlight lenses to start to show their age. They fade, look cloudy, and don’t perform as well as they once did. Don’t be surprised if parts like the 2000 Honda Accord headlights need to be restored.

What Causes Cloudy Headlights?

Headlight lenses are made of a very strong plastic that protects your headlights from gravel and all sorts of debris that you might encounter while on the road. When these lenses are manufactured, they are coated with a special UV protection that helps them to avoid oxidization. Overtime, your older 2000 Honda Accord headlight lenses lose that coating, and the plastic starts to fade and become cloudy.

How to Restore Faded 2000 Honda Accord Headlights

The good news is that restoring those faded headlights on your older vehicle is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project. You will need a few different grits of wet-dry sandpaper, some car soap, painter’s tape, a lens restorer kit or polish/wax, and a few microfiber towels. In no time at all, your 2000 Honda Accord headlights will be shining brightly again.

Follow these steps to clean off years of grit and oxidation from your headlights:

1)  Thoroughly clean the headlights with car soap and a microfiber towel. Put some elbow grease into it – you’ve got years of grime to wash off.

2)  Apply painter’s tape around the headlight to protect your car’s paint job.

3)  Wet your most abrasive sandpaper (start with 1000 grit) and sand the plastic cover on the headlight using horizontal strokes. You may need to rewet the sandpaper as you work.

4)  Repeat step 3 with 2000 grit sandpaper and then 3000 grit sandpaper. Alternate sanding in horizontal and vertical strokes with each new grit of paper. Always make sure the area is wet while sanding.

5)  Wipe off the headlight with a clean microfiber cloth and polish.

6)  Once your headlight looks fantastic, apply car wax.

7)  Use a UV sealant to prevent the problem from happening again.

If you choose to use a lens restorer kit, make sure to follow the instructions in the box carefully to get the best results.
