Knowing the Difference Between Clutch and Brake Fluid

When it comes to our vehicles, most of us know that we need gas to run them, and every couple of months, your oil needs to be changed. However, there are some maintenance requirements that are less popular, but they are very important.

If you want your car to last, it is essential to take note of what your vehicle needs to correctly operate and do what you can to meet those needs. Two things that car owners should know about are clutch and brake fluid.

What Is Clutch Fluid?

Surprise – clutch fluid is actually a type of brake fluid found in the clutch cylinder. This particular fluid is stored in the clutch master cylinder, which, when you depress the clutch pedal, allows for the fluid to get to the slave cylinder allowing for the car to change or shift gears. After the gear has changed, you then release the clutch, which sees the fluid traveling back to the master cylinder.

What Is Brake Fluid?

If your brakes are not operating correctly, something to check is the brake fluid. This particular fluid is essential in the proper functioning of your car's brake system. Without the fluid lubricating the intricate parts of the wheel and brake, it would be hard to stop. More importantly, it can cause some severe damage.

The brake fluid can be found in the brake lines and is released when we push down on the brake pedal. So, the harder we push down, the more fluid is released to either slow us down or bring us to a complete stop.

Why Does It Matter?

If you drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, the clutch fluid allows your car to shift gears efficiently and without lag. However, without proper maintenance or inspection of the said fluid, you can significantly impact the operations of your vehicle.

If you do not ensure your vehicle is always operating on clean or proper brake fluid, this can make driving very dangerous. How? Every time we come to a stop sign or a red light, we use the brake fluid. Those are not even the only instances to worry about. If something is off, then you cannot stop efficiently, which can have potentially fatal consequences.

Knowing the Signs to Check Your Brake or Clutch Fluid

Knowing when to go to the mechanic or when our car needs serious attention can be challenging for many people.

Here are a few examples to consider as signs that your vehicle should be brought to a mechanic or dealership for a checkup. Not addressing these problems could further damage the car, as well as compromise you and your safety.

Clutch Fluid

If your car is having the following issues, it could be a problem with the clutch fluid:

  • Resistance – If you notice that changing gears has suddenly gotten a bit harder, it could be that your clutch fluid is either low, or there may be something wrong with the flow. Transitioning between gears should not be a rough process but a smooth one.
  • Stumbling – Are you finding yourself stalling or lurching forward when the lights change? This could be a sign that you are low on clutch fluid.
  • Noisy – Is your car slightly louder than usual? Do you find that not only is your vehicle noisy but that you are noticing it also requires more effort to shift up or down a gear? Low clutch fluid or a compromised compartment could be resulting in the grinding of gears, which, if left unaddressed, could result in further (and more expensive) damages.

Brake Fluid

If your car is having the following issues, it could be a problem with the brake fluid:

  • Anti-lock Brake System Alert – Also known as ABS, if this light comes on, there is a chance that your brake fluid needs to be checked, either because it is low or it needs to be replaced.
  • Resistance – Do you find it hard to hit the brakes? This could be because your brake fluid is low and needs to be refilled. When you push down on the brake pedal, it should not require an ample amount of force; instead, it should respond even to the slightest touch or tap.
  • Squealing – If you find that your car is making noise at every red light or there is a high pitch squeal coming from your vehicle with every push on the brake pedal, it may be time to get your brakes checked.
